Graudenz > Namensverzeichnisse Taufen 1857-1886

Hello,

I apologize for posting this in English, but I am hoping someone is familiar with the Taufen records that are referenced in the index found at:

Ostgebiete: Evang. Zentralarchiv Berlin > Kreis Graudenz (Provinz Westpreußen) > Graudenz > Namensverzeichnisse Taufen 1857-1886, Bild 21
EZA 980/6218 Na) 1848-1851-1857-1886 St / Ld
Verfilmt 1993, Microformat Stystem, b.v. 2160 AG Lisse, Niederlande

In the index are 2 separate groups of names with numbers separated by a line under each letter of the alphabet.

BELOW the line I found the names and numbers from the index above in the records found under: Graudenz, Landgemeinde > Taufen

ABOVE the line is my mystery, I cannot find these Taufen records.

(Graudenz, Stadtgemeinde seems to have own Namensverzeichnisse Taufen 1841-1890 that references its own records: Taufen 1844-1865, etc.)

I am specifying looking at 1865: Weiss, Otto Freidrich number 61 (above the line), Baptism Place: Graudenz, Westpreußen, Preußen, Deutschland, (birth date 15 May 1865). Immigration in 1889 to Chicago, IL.

Do you know which Taufen records in Archion he when be in or which church might have the record? I would like to know names of his parents.

Thank you for any assistance,
Joan Frank, Indiana

Found in 1865 your
Otto Friedrich Weiss 61
here : http://www.archion.de/p/2e50d64e4f/

but

couldn’t find a record for your ancestor in the ‘Stadtgemeinde’ Taufbuch
neither on May 15, 1865 http://www.archion.de/p/a391f7f768/
nor on No 61 http://www.archion.de/p/37f89299b3/

and for Graudenz, Landgemeinde apparently the birth records for the year 1865 do no longer exist
there are only Taufen 1853 (fragment)
and Taufen 1867 (fragment) available,
nothin between these years.

Maybe another researcher has an idea ?

I assume you mean this:

The situation in Graudenz is very complicated. Since 1841/1847 there were different church registers for the north and south district. Additionally the north district was divided into Stadt- and Landgemeinde. Since 1900 there were additional books for the east and the country district.

Unfortunately, a lot of church registers didn't survive world war II. So it happened that there are name registers, but the church registers they are related to don't exist any more. This seems to be the case for the one in which Otto Friedrich Weiss is listed. Sorry about that ...

You can find more information about the still existing church registers in Westpreussen on this page (in German):

Thank you BOTH so much in looking into this. I understand records can be missing. It is sad to think of all the things that were destroyed in the war. I just wanted to make sure I was not the one missing them. I will definitely investigate this other website. I had not heard of it before, so thanks for the tip.

A couple of questions about married couple.
Adam Weiss, Käthner in Rudnin, widower, 40 years and Maria Meinnke, at present in Rudnik (=Rudnick)
Is Rudnin and Rudnik possibly really Maly Rudick south of Grudziadz?
Do you think Käthner is really Kätner, meaning a farm laborer? Otto was a tailor in Chicago, with his own store. Could a farm laborer’s son learn to become a tailor back in 1870-1880’s before immigrating? I am still learning the history and culture of the area.
Thank you again so much,
Joan

He name of the village is in both cases "Rudnik". There are several Rudniks in the Graudenz Landgemeinde. Search here for Rudnik:

I think the most probable one is Rudnick/Rudnik, now a part of Mniszek (south of Graudenz):

Not sure about the customs in Western Prussia, but in the 19th century it was not unusual that the son had a different profession than the father. In addition a Kätner didn't have a lot of possesions and only a small income, so they often had a second job. Maybe the father was working as a tailor as well.

Please note, that the marriage record says, that Maria Meinnke was from Lunau (Małe Łunawy or Wielke Łunawy). A village southwest of Graudenz.

Joan,

Käthner, Kätner, Kötter, Köter, Köthner, Kötner and Kossat(h) are all the same: a cottager with a small piece of land who had to generate additional income by doing other jobs on the side. Oftentimes as a farm laborer, but also as a school teacher, tailor or shoemaker for example.

I wish that people would respond when they are getting help here. This was the last time that I answered a poster who has less than 10 posts. I'm kind of ticked off, to be honest.

Ich wünschte, daß sich die Fragesteller nochmal rühren würden, wenn sie hier eine Antwort erhalten. Das war das letzte Mal, daß ich einem Poster mit weniger als 10 Posts geantwortet habe. Nervt mich irgendwie.
