Are these the same names?

I am reading an excerpt of a publication that includes this record in the ancestry. The author assumes the last name Möger of the baptismal sponsors is the same as Meyer. Are these the same names?

Thanks,

Tina

This is very unlikely.

Meier (Meyer/Maier/Mayer) is one of the most common names in Germany. In the middle ages it was the name of a profession, denominating the manager of an estate, usually in possession of the nobility or a monastery. In later times generally a tenant or an independent farmer.

Möger is a very seldom name and the origin is not very clear to me. It could possibly be related to a village name, but as I'm no expert in onomastics I cannot tell for sure.

If you like to know more about the name Möger/Moeger, you might go to the forum at www.onomastik.com (you'll need a user ID). If you ask for the origin of that name, you should provide details like time and location where the person of interest lived.
