kofall von Wittenberg (Jöran Jöransson)

I would like to get information about my ancestor from Finland, the Kajaani castle captain Kofall von Wittenberg (Jöran Jöransson), born around 1630 in Saxony-Anhalt. I would like to know the name and social status of his parents? Is he a noble family? I cannot find information about Finland and Sweden in the digital archive. The history of the ancestor is lost. Please help! Marko Haataja Finland

Bitte helfen Sie!

Good morning.

I suspect this is your post as well, right?

Plus there is a "family tree" on Geni and other platforms, right?

---------------------------------

Kofahl is a still existing family name in Germany.

"von" Wittenberg is not necessarily any indication for nobility, but may simply indicate his region / place of origin.

----------------------------------

Church registers from Wittenberg, Saxony-Anhalt, are not yet available at Archion.

Wittenberg church registers start in 1560 for births/baptisms, marriages and deaths/burials, as i.e. to be provided here:

-----------------------------

Other than that your topic will be moved from the way to general forum "Names" (you cannot automatically search Archion's holdings for names) to the specific forum for Saxony-Anhalt.

Kind regards,
Vera

Yes, it's mine. He was an important person in Kajaani, Finland. For some reason I get a lot of geni.com connections through marriages to kings. Usually 13-16 people in a thread. I don't understand why so many? I have a trial version.

Don't rely on such posts.

In case you want to check it, ask for a complete ancestors report (starting with Carl XVI Gustaf) and going backwards to your "Kofall" with each an every detail including detailed sources.

Ah ja, I see - thanks.

However, your line starts about 200 years after Jöran Jöransson's life time.
So were is the connection between "Sinä" and Jöran Jöransson???

He apparently was a well-known military in Finland.

-----------------------------------

To me it seems that his nick name was "Kofall / Kofahl [originating] from Wittenberg".
I really doubt that there was any nobility involved.

The family name "Kofahl" and variations thereof is of ancient Sorbian origin and means "Schmied" / blacksmith - for more details see here

A man named Simon Kophal (that is a simple variation of this family name) resided in Schwiepke, a small village in the German region "Wendland"

Not to far away there's i.e. the city, Wittenberge.
Pure guessing only > that may also be his place of origin.

Bottom-line: without any further information to be researched in Finnish archives / Swedisch archive etc., it is kind of unlikely that you find him in Germany.
