The Regional Church Archive of the Protestant-Lutheran Church in Bavaria is the central specialist authority for church archive matters in the territory of the Protestant Regional Church in Bavaria. It is responsible for the supervision of archive matters and historical church libraries in the territory of the regional church.
The catchment area of the Protestant-Lutheran Church in Bavaria covers, with a few exceptions, the territory of the Free State of Bavaria.
Since 2019, the Protestant-Lutheran Church in Bavaria has been providing financial means to digitize all historic church records. For this reason, the Regional Church Archive in Nuremberg has the chance to comprehensively record, edit, and digitize the church books and make them largely accessible via Archion. The implementation of the extensive project is scheduled until 2030. When the project was launched, about half of the Protestant church books in Bavaria were still stored on site in the respective parishes. Each parish can choose whether its church books shall be centrally stored in the Nuremberg archive or returned to the original parish after their digitization.
A current overview of the complete inventory that is stored in the Regional Church Archive and/or has already been digitized can be downloaded as as PDF-file from the website of the archive:

Thousands of main registers such as baptism, marriage and death records are already accessible online via Archion.
Every year, recently digitized church books - alternating with inventories from other regions - are presented online in several steps.
Apart from the option to conduct research online with Archion, it is possible to gain insight into the digitized church books on site in the Regional Church Archive in Nuremberg. Beyond that, the archive provides so-called “Verkartungen” (registers in the form of index cards, usually in alphabetical order) that can be used upon reservation.
