Digitization of Bavarian Church Records now in its Second Half

Published on: 09. March 2025

In 2019, the Regional Church Archive in Nuremberg had already presented 8000 historic church books online on Archion, when the Protestant-Lutheran Church in Bavaria provided financial means for the digitization of its remaining inventory. Thus, it became possible to record, edit, digitize and, as far as privacy regulations allow, make available the church records of all Bavarian deanships on Archion by 2030.

The deputy director of the Nuremberg archive, Dr. Daniel Schönwald, recently announced that the digitization was going according to plan and almost half of the whole project was now finished. The editing has been completed for the church districts Ansbach-Würzburg and Ulm, while now, in this order, the in part predominantly Catholic and therefore less time-consuming church districts Bayreuth, Regensburg, Augsburg and Munich are due. Because of the complexity of the project, however, it is not possible to determine precisely in which order the individual parishes will be covered. The priorization will take place step by step under consideration of different factors.

We thank Dr. Daniel Schönwald for the pleasant cooperation and are happy to refer to the digitized material of the Protestant-Lutheran Church in Bavaria that is already available online on Archion:
